Red face Wall-Grinding Issues

I know.... some of you folks call it wall-hugging.

I've been calling it wall-grinding since before I even heard the terms "wall-hugging" or even "grinding" applied to any sort of game (I used it extensively in the racing games Wipeout 2097 and Sega Rally Championship) ...

In any case... I think I officially have a wall-grinding problem.

Its not so much that my instinctive response upon entering any new area is to cling to the left wall and ride it like a monorail...

... Its more the fact that... having spent this morning grinding around the edge of Gyala Hatchery (explorable).... I then turned the computer off and wall-grinded my way to work.

... Yes. In real life.

I guess I hadn't really engaged my brain, as I was about half way to work when I found myself deliberately weaving around the contours of the buildings and realised I'd been doing it the whole way.

Apparently after getting Canthan Grandmaster Cartographer I'll be aiming for London Grandmaster Cartographer...

...Well, as long as you don't start stabbing hobos, hoping for a super elite green soda can drop, you'll be fine.

Haven't done that yet, but then I'm not a green-farmer.

However it might be noted that when I do have to break away from the walls, I have a rather distinctive way of Dashing... which tends to last about... three seconds. Mostly do it to avoid aggro from traffic while crossing the road (and I'm so glad its not illegal here).

That aside, I've been using the wall-grinding tactic to get rid of fog-of-war and similar map revealing in various games for many years now... so its not just a Guild Wars thing.

As long as you're not doing it on the freeway and in parking garages, you'll be fine.

Meh. Shadow Form will protect me... And if I find myself bleeding to death in the road it'll be because I wasn't paying attention to the flashing icon (or rather that my vision has the GUI switched off and I can't turn it back on again).

You might want to give it a try! I soloed some old person in the grocery store the other day and had a pack of chips drop for me... Gave me +1 to my 'freaking tasty' attribute!

Firstly I'd like to note that I came up with the term independant of any MMORPG use of the term "grinding"... I coined it when I was playing Sega Rally Championship [Random note: I've been a gamer since the days of the Sega Master System, so it didn't start with the Saturn] because I found that often I could get around the track faster if rather than staying away from the walls I just stuck the vehicle right up against the barrier (grinding the paintwork off in a spray of sparks, as it appears to). I found it was also a very useful way of getting through games with randomly generated labyrinthine dungeons (e.g. Evolution : World of Sacred Device) without getting hopelessly lost.
I have used the term ever since for my habit of pushing myself right up against the wall and running along it as if I'm trying to push through at an angle (often fast enough to get severe friction-burns).

SECONDLY...... Even by the MMORPG definition of a grind... I go from area to area painstakingly giving every single nook and cranny of every wall and obstacle the cat treatment (i.e. rubbing up against it). Its rather slow and once again I emphasize its not just a Guild Wars thing. I even do it in games where there is no reward whatsoever for uncovering the whole map (e.g. Skies of Arcadia)... I just feel like taking the time to skirt around the edges rather than doing things the fast and direct way.
I'd say it qualifies as a grind since it involves achieving something by persistant stubbornness and brute determination.

This thread makes me smile.

Maybe you should go for a London Cartographer and a Drunkard title at the same time?

Unfortunately a lot less than that if you include Greater London. Its a freakin massive city (3rd biggest in the world if I remember rightly)...

But if you're just counting the "City of London" ... i.e. Central London... i.e. my territory.... then I'm probably around 70% ... ^_^

Investigating every nook and cranny of London might be hellishly tough.... but in the real world alcohol effects last more than one minute and achieving the Incorrigable Ale-Hound title is a walk in the park (yes, I've already spent a few weeks of my life drunk, so that title is as good as mine).

You wanna make sure you kill that spirit of Laceration before you cross the road then in that case...might save you a few pips of health degeneration while you're bleeding.

Maybe if you post your map we can circle the bits you've not explored yet.
